The [Social] MEDIA Ecosystem in Instructional Design: A Proposal and Collective Exploration 🚀

Hello, wonderful LinkedIn community! 🌟

I’ve spent considerable time delving into the interplay of social media and instructional design. Today, I bring forth a concept that I believe can reshape our field: the [Social] MEDIA Ecosystem. This term encapsulates the confluence of traditional media tools with the dynamic, interactive sphere of social media to create, deliver, and promote courses. Though its origins trace back to 2007 in other sectors, I see a fresh application for us, the instructional design community. Let’s embark on this journey together! 🎉

A Quick Dive into History 📜

Darren Herman, founder of Izea, introduced the term “social media ecosystem” in 2007, painting a picture of interwoven social media components that breathe life into a dynamic network of users and content¹. As the term evolved, domains like business and marketing embraced it in unique ways. A decade and some later, I invite us to reimagine its potential in our arena.

Our Collective Perspective 📚

Building on these insights, I present the idea of the [Social] MEDIA Ecosystem for course creation and learning design. Here’s the vision: together, we harness the power of social media to craft courses that resonate deeply, ensuring utmost relevance and relatability.

Enter the term “social prototyping.” Think of it as a live beta-testing phase for our courses—by sharing snippets, modules, or interactive elements on platforms like X or Instagram, we gather real-time feedback, allowing courses to evolve even before their full release. For instance, an instructional designer might release a mini-module on gamified learning via X, collect user engagement metrics, and refine based on user feedback.

A Nod to the Past, Eyes on the Future 💖

Grateful to the pioneers of the “social media ecosystem”, I’m optimistic about our collaborative journey. By embracing the [Social] MEDIA Ecosystem and the potent potential of social prototyping, we stand at the threshold of a future where our courses are more interconnected, agile, and transformative. This vision isn’t just about advancing our field; it’s about ensuring the best learning experiences for our students.

So, what are your thoughts? How do you envision blending the [Social] facet with instructional design? I’d love for us to connect, converse, and co-create. And, of course, don’t forget to ring that bell on LinkedIn to stay in the loop! 🔔
