#DesignForward Day 3 – Embracing Wellness & Creativity

Transforming Fitness Routines for Better Wellbeing

Hello everyone! As we dive into another day of our December of #DesignForward series, this weekend we’re focusing on wellbeing and how it fuels our creativity. Specifically, let’s talk about exercise routines, and how listening to our bodies can revolutionize the way we approach fitness and, in turn, our creative work.

My Journey: A Pause in Routine for Renewed Vitality

November was a unique month for me. I took a step back from my usual exercise routine, heeding my body’s call for rest. Instead, I focused on meditation and breathwork, tools that significantly boosted my focus and productivity. This pause wasn’t a setback; it actually prepared me for jumping right back into my 10k training with Tommy Rivs, matching the pace I had earlier in the year.

The Turning Point: Re-evaluating Wellness Practices

But let’s rewind a bit. About 2.5 years ago, my physical health hit a low point. I was faced with limited mobility, extra weight and dwindling energy (and so much more), yet I refused to accept this as my “new normal” despite medical opinions.

This was the catalyst for a profound change in how I approach my health and fitness.

The Transformation: Research, Treadmills, and iFIT

I dove headfirst into research, consuming journals, blogs, books, and more, all while starting to work with a functional doctor.

Around the same time, I invested in a Nordictrack treadmill, initially skeptical as an avid outdoor exerciser [when I was able to exercise]. This treadmill, coupled with the iFIT app and its outdoor training programs, revolutionized my training approach.

The ActivePulse feature of iFIT, focusing on heart rate and effort level rather than pace or distance, was a game-changer for me.

A New Training Philosophy: Heart Rate Over Pace ❤️

The heart rate-focused training with Tommy Rivs [and all of iFIT] was initially challenging, especially moving away from ingrained metrics like speed and distance.

It required relearning to focus on heart rate, a vital shift that allowed me to take a recent 1.5-month break from running without losing long-term progress.

Linking Fitness to Creativity & Work

In upcoming posts, I’ll delve deeper into how this shift in fitness philosophy has positively impacted my work as a creative service provider and entrepreneur.

The focus on heart rate and well-being has enabled me to maintain my pace while keeping my heart rate precisely where it needs to be, a balance that fuels both my personal and business success.

Recommended Reading & Resources

To further understand this approach, I highly recommend two books that have been instrumental in my journey:

  1. Daniels’ Running Formula” by Jack Daniels, PhD – foundational knowledge for the heart rate-focused training approach.
  2. 80/20 Running” by Matt Fitzgerald – a great complementary read, offering additional insights into balanced training.

Remember, this isn’t just about running! It’s about starting where you are, using heart rate as a guide for your preferred movement method, whether it’s walking, running, or anything else.

It’s about enhancing your overall wellness and well-being, not just chasing old metrics of pace and speed.
